Johnnie Walker to package whiskey in paper bottles starting next year

WASHINGTON (SBG) — Forget barrels, say hello to paper bottles. While whiskey is often aged in wooden barrels, Johnnie Walker is serving up its scotch in a wood — just in a different form.

Parent company Diageo said the new bottle, made of wood pulp, will be released next year. The bottles will be 100% free of plastic and are expected to be fully recyclable.

Diageo partnered with Pilot Lite to create the paper bottle, launching Pulpex Limited, a sustainable packaging technology company.

Other big names like Unilever and PepsiCo are also joining Pulpix Limited. They are expected to launch their own branded paper bottles in 2021 as well.
